This session on co-operatives will provide participants with a hands-on opportunity to experience the first stages of the development of a co-op. Co-ops give members a democratic ownership role in the enterprise, address the needs that conventional enterprises often don’t or can’t address, and keep profits in the community.

Participants will be invited to choose a worker, producer or consumer co-op group. Each group will be facilitated by a leader in these respective co-op types. Participants will experience how the co-op model differs from other business enterprise models and the value of membership and the different types of members, and will acquire information on resources and steps for co-op start-up.

The session will begin with a brief overview of the co-op business structure in comparison with other business models. This introduction will feature representatives from each type of co-op along with co-op developers. Participants will then be invited to choose a worker, producer or consumer co-op group; each group will be facilitated by a leader in these respective co-op types. Groups will ponder the following: what is the co-op enterprise idea; what’s the purpose of the co-op, how & when will members be engaged; how will the co-op make money; will it be for or not for profit; why a co-op, etc. Each group will then share the decisions they made and why, what they learned and what they see as their next steps.

Each participant will get a copy of our Cultivating Co-ops: A resource guide for co-operative development in British Columbia to take home with them.
